From my experience over the last thirteen years, I have found that there are 3 secrets to growing your coaching practice:
3. Set Goals Each Year
2. Keep Your Confidence Level Up
1. Know When to say Yes
Secret #3: Set Goals Each Year
It is important to get all the goals and dreams that are in your head down on paper. When you do this you crystallize your goals and make them more real.
Envision what you want one to three years from now. Then think about what you want to accomplish in the next year to get there. I am a fan of “chunking it down” into “bite size pieces”. Identify what you want to accomplish each quarter and then back it into your calendar to ensure the tasks that lead to the goals will happen.
Secret #2: Keep Your Confidence Level Up
As a coach it is crucial to keep your confidence level up. Sometimes things get the best of you. The more you adhere to Secret # 3: Set Goals Each Year and also focus on what you are passionate about, you will be more successful at keeping your confidence level up.
This expresses how important the #1 Secret: Know When to Say Yes is. When you say yes to something that you do not feel good about, your confidence automatically wavers. Don’t let this be your undoing.
Secret #1: Know When to Say Yes
Like lots of folks in the coaching profession, I want to help everyone. It can be very easy to say yes before realizing what you said yes to. While working with a wonderful coach myself a few years ago, I developed three criteria for saying yes. These criteria have been instrumental to the success of my practice.
To develop your three criteria for saying yes, think about what’s important to you in your whole life, not just in your business. (1) Where do you want to be spending your time? (2) What type of client work are you passionate about and (3) what drains your energy? Come up with three criteria for saying yes and try it out. The key to all of this is to stop and breathe before answering yes or no so that you take the time to be diligent about sticking to the three criteria that you established.
It is important to have your house in order, to “build your foundation”, and to set goals each year to ensure you know what you want to focus on to grow your business. If you are doing the client work that you are most passionate about, your energy will most likely stay positive and you will be focusing on your best work. When you are doing your best work and feel like you are on top of your game, your confidence is usually the highest. At this point, when something gets in the way, you are more equipped to deal with it and not let it distract you from being your best and moving forward.
One more thing: While practicing these three secrets for success, enjoy the journey and continue to breathe along the way.
