As a young woman I denied my calling, the life that called my name, and I achieved worldly “success.” I ignored my desire to write, considered it fanciful. Instead, I graduated Harvard Law School with honors. I stomped around in designer suits on partnership track in a swanky law firm. But the higher I climbed, the sadder I felt. My ambition couldn’t replace inspiration. You don’t get to choose your true wild desire or the life that calls you. You only get to choose whether or not you will listen. And that choice makes all the difference in your life and the world.
One day I walked out of “everything” to discover everything, and create the work I loved. I wrote about this journey in my first best-selling book This Time I Dance! Creating the Work you Love (Tarcher/Penguin).
Now as a national speaker and career coach, I help other artists, leaders, entrepreneurs, and visionaries dedicate themselves to the work they are truly meant to do. We are in inspired times. Everything in the economy and career climate is changing. It’s time to focus on inspired success instead of linear success. It’s the only way to bring something creative, alive, and wondrous to the table: gifts and talents with invincible power and sustainability.
For the past 20 years, I’ve worked with tens of thousands of retreat participants, workshop attendees, and private clients and helped them choose from inspiration instead of limitation or love instead of fear. I’d like to share some of the strategies/focuses that helped them most, ones that have also helped me become a bestselling author, national “expert” and grow a creative empire through passionate and unconventional means. I’m paraphrasing from my new book Inspired & Unstoppable: Wildly Succeeding in your Life’s Work! (Tarcher/Penguin):
The thing that kills dreams and wild success is self-doubt. It’s not about money or how savvy you are. It’s about how much you are willing to trust yourself. Will you listen to your own brilliance? Will you allow yourself and your true expression the time it takes? Will you encourage instead of condemn yourself? Whether you’re starting a new software company, taking your coaching practice to a next level, or auditioning for Hollywood, I want you to train your mind to become an unstoppable warrior for your life’s work.
I want you to champion your own genius. It’s time to become more intentional about how you focus your mind and your life. Everyone rushes to take actions. But I want you to take inspired actions. There is something you’re here to do. I don’t want you to force it. I want you to become a force for it.
Give Yourself a Thousand Chances. You true work is worth all the time it takes. Haven’t hit the success you desire yet? Always choose to begin again. Wipe the past clean. You can’t have a new future if you insist on seeing the present with eyes that only see the past. Can you dare again? Can you give yourself permission to have a new experience? Get 500 rejections. And try again. Learn as you go, but keep listening to the love inside you more than the temporary facts. The facts will never change your calling. But your calling can change the facts.
Chase Your Grace Not Your Guilt—Pay attention to how something feels to you. Does it drain you or give you energy? It doesn’t matter if everyone else who has used a certain technique or service has raced to the NY Times Bestseller list, got massive funding for their non-profit, kicked depression, or made an 8 figure income in 3 nanoseconds…none of it matters a fig – if it doesn’t move you. If you don’t really want to go that way, you won’t sustain it. You won’t infuse it. It will be hollow, and even the “right” actions won’t lead to results for you. Chase your grace. Follow your heat, your curiosity, your inspired direction. You will move mountains when you’re moved. There’s a reason some things feel extraordinary to you, and some don’t. You have your own way to succeed.
Mojo Mastery: Focus on What’s Working Right
Achievers and creators tend to always feel as though they’re not doing enough. Want to have sparks flying all around you, and synchronicity sweep through your days? Focus on your success, not on your lack of success. Are you looking at all that’s stuck or failing or are you looking at all that’s moving in the right direction? What you focus on grows. Focus on the excitement of momentum, shifts, and wins, the whoppers and the fragile ones that no one else can even see. You are doing so much right. Progress is happening on so many levels. This path is not about cracking the whip. It’s about crackling with excitement.
In Inspired & Unstoppable, I ask, “What if everything you think you need to do to succeed– is actually standing in the way of your success?” It is. Most of us have learned how to achieve through will power, anxiety, and sacrifice. Creating your life’s work comes from passion, freedom, and miraculous alignment.
Our world needs your work. You have more resources than you know. This is your time to wildly succeed. If you want to stay inspired, it will take practice. It will take intentionality. It will take your breath away. It’s the reason you’re here.
